It’s not things we do, but the thing that You did, That causes our lives, in Your life, to be hid; There’s no hidden formula, no secret knack Of causing You not to see all that we lack. You paid the price and You covered the cost, When You died on that tree, ‘twas for all who were lost; And ‘all who were lost’, covers each who will live, For each one of us, Your life you did give. There is little enough we can do in return, Not one thing could cause us this great gift to earn; But we give You our service, our love and our best, And find in the giving, it’s us who are blest. You offer Communion, to share bread with You, And when we partake, we are blessed through and through; You offer us friendship and times shared in prayer, When e’er we accept this, You always are there. You offer Baptism, a cleansing from sin, Washed in water and Your blood, new life we begin. These things are not laws, that we really must do, We know our salvation was paid for by You. You offer Your Word, and Your Spirit to guide, If we ask, as we read it, He’ll be by our side; And as we are reading, our spirits will grow; As we read with His help, more of God we will know. All of these things can just help us draw near, To our Father in Heaven who loves us so dear; When we do any, or all; out of love for our Lord, The love He returns is our greatest reward. His love doesn’t change, for it always was there, But as we obey, we become more aware; Our spirits will open, our vessels will grow, And more of His love He is able to show. His love is so great; it would blow us away, And so, on our knowing it, He puts a stay; Until as we grow, He is, able to pour, Into our empty vessels, of His oil, more and more. When our vessel is full, or we put on the lid; He’ll love us as much, as forever He did, But He’ll stop the pouring of His holy rain, Till we choose to open our lives once again. And when once again empty vessels we bring, We’ll find that again God will do His ‘God thing’; And pour out His blessings on our dry thirsty soul, Soak our spirits, heal our minds, and make all of us whole. © 26/10/98
