The Lord Laughs
The Lord looked on as the world was formed, And clapped His hands with glee; It brings a smile of pride to His face, When He looks at you and me. And when His children gather in joy, To praise His Holy Name; The Lord our God, He laughs out loud, As His children do the same. He’s not a staid and surly God, Who rules with an iron bar; And you can be sure, where there’s honest joy, His Spirit is not afar. He loves us to laugh, and it does us good, He says in His Holy Word; His Spirit brings joy, along with His love, Wherever His Word is heard. The world looks on, in its own sad way, And it thinks that we are bound; It cannot see, in this yoke of love, Our freedom we truly have found. It’s not by the ‘no’s’ of God we are held, But His ‘yes’s’ that set us free; When we show out the laughter His Spirit brings, We can help the world to see. Our God is not sad, and solemn, and sour, Intent upon banning fun; When we place our lives into His hands, Our ‘joy trip’ has only begun. There’s freedom and safety in being held, In the hands of a loving Lord; There are treasures of joy, of peace and of love, That the world could never afford. For when the Lord laughs, it’s never at pain, At sickness, or sadness, or fear; But a smile and a laugh is brought to His face, When a hurting soul dares to draw near. And He laughs with joy, at a kindness done, At a gift given out in His Name; It gives Him great pleasure when healing is sought, Or His people, His promises claim. One of the fruits of His Spirit is joy, A fruit from the Living Vine, You can hear Him declare, when His people laugh out, "These branches, they surely are Mine." So don’t stifle laughter, nor yet take offence, When others their laughter won’t still; For there is no merit in ‘holy disdain’, That the spirit of laughter would kill. "Fear not", sang the angels, bringing tidings of joy, "Lift your praise to the Father on high. The Spirit of love and of joy has come down, And the day of Salvation is nigh." Let laughter ring out, and with it your praise, Let the Lord be the source of your fun; For He breathed out laughter with His very breath, Right back, when the world was begun. © 20/8/2003
