Attending a course for those on unemployment benefits, I watched a young artistic lad (whom I had come to learn over the weeks was a committed Christian) shrivel when shouted at one day, for 'doodling' art work as the lecturer was speaking. To be fair, the instructor did apologise to him after, as it had been rather demeaning, & 'Ben' had shown himself to be interested and involved & was not what you would call a 'slacker'.
As Christians, we need to be very aware of the power of our words, to wound or heal those on the recieving end. As Scripture says in Proverbs 18:21 the tongue holds the power of death & life!

BEN

He sits within the classroom,

His mind is forced to stay;

But though his mind and body sit,

His spirit longs to stray.

His spirit trapped within his soul,

Still struggles to be free,

It makes its presence known to him,

But quickly it will flee.

In gentler tones and quiet times,

Its wishes will come out;

But gentle spirits will withdraw;

At harsh and cruel shout.

He needs to touch the Holy One,

To have his strength renewed;

For only God can strengthen one

Whose spirit’s been eschewed.

He needs to take some time apart,

To let his spirit grow;

To breathe, and stretch and gently heal,

And learn its Lord to know.

Gentle spirit, bruised and torn,

The Lord, He will not break;

But softly call His hurt lamb home,

And from him sorrow take.
