Christian soldier, marching on, Boldly to the fray; Don’t despise the little one, Who’d get in the way. With your eyes fixed straight ahead, On Christ our general; Don’t ignore those right beside, Who might stumble, fall. Reach out your hand, to lift them up, Take from their back, the load; What the prize, if you reach the end, But leave them on the road? Mind the leader of your group, Your local pastor, priest; For though he marches at the front, He’ll not forget the least. For it was for the least, Christ came, He’s Shepherd over all; He came to save the rich and great, He came to save the small. His Spirit calls out pastors, Anoints them with His love; Calls them to feed His little lambs, And guide them safe above. Each pastor is a shepherd, And under Christ must fall; Their ear must be attuned to Him, Must hear His every call. And we must find our shepherd too, To guide us on this earth; To follow him, as he follows Christ, And learn to know his worth. He’s the one who hears the Word, For where this group should go; We must learn to heed his voice, And grow his heart to know. For there is safety in this plan, God’s priests should lead the way; And as we follow in their steps, Safe on His path we’ll stay. Our God will speak to each of us, About our daily life; But we must have a leader, Who will keep us out of strife. Our local shepherd guards his flock, From wolves or poison weed, He grows a rich, pure, pasture, Where we can safely feed. He watches if we start to stray, And calls our lives to task; But if we have a hidden need, It’s up to us to ask. As sheep, we must be gentle, To those within, without; But also we are soldiers, Who must spread God’s Word about. For sheep have not the boldness, That a soldier’s called to show; Though they will follow, faithfully, The shepherd that they know. And soldiers can be ‘blinkered’, As they set their sights to win; Abandoning their wounded, To save the lost from sin. A sheep by nature’s gentle, And seldom will it fight; So we can hide, in gentleness, And not proclaim the Light. But we must find the balance, To walk out in daily living; Bold soldiers marching out the Word, And by Christ’s teaching, living © 28/8-1/9-2003
