Pure Love

Lord, it scares me, this love You pour out,

Unreasonable, unfathomable love,

I don’t deserve it.

And yet You never said I have to.

You love me without insisting

That I love You in return;

So how can I fail to respond

To Your limitless love?

But still those times I turn away,

Your love flows on;

It is as unceasing as its Giver,

Unconditional love.

I give my heart, pour out my love,

But when it’s snubbed, retreat;

Retract my love and run

From unresponsive humankind.

You’ve faced our unresponsive hearts

Right from the start,

From Adam through till now, and on beyond

We’ve failed to comprehend Your love.

But oh, the peace Your love brings to my heart;

The thrill when someone speaks about Your love;

The message – too good to be true,

That all of You is love – and You give us all of You.

And unbelievable but true, You thrill to our response;

You love us with a love so huge, and yet,

The tiny scraps of love we offer You

Bring joy and honour to a doting Father’s heart.

You do not judge our love

The way we judge each other’s;

But look upon the heart,

And know each scar and blemish which affects our love.

You are our fairytale come true,

The answer to a childhood longing,

You fill the empty, nameless, space;

A space made for Your love; and You.

Pure love can heal the foulest scar,

Can wash away all sin and pain,

Pure love is what each human needs;

And Lord we know, pure love’s exactly what You are.
