Paul teaches that wives are to submit to their husbands as they would to the Lord, BUT ....
he also teaches that husbands are to treat their wives as Christ treated the church (that is be ready to lay down their lives for them.) [Ephesians 5:22-33]
>
As Christ Loved the Church
Look after your wife, whilst you may,
You’ll answer to Jesus one day,
He’ll say, "Did you love her as I,
Were you ready your life down to lie?"
And wives treat your husband with care,
Imagine it’s Jesus stands there;
Would you answer the way that you do,
If ‘twas Jesus was speaking to you?
This love that God’s Word does require,
Is not just all passion and fire,
It’s caring for him more than you,
And loving what e’er you go through.
Though a man’s not a man, who will use,
And carelessly his wife abuse,
Still a wife to his will should submit,
And see that God’s honoured in it.
But God does not batter His Bride,
So behind "wives submit’, man can’t hide,
For God’s Word is purer and higher,
And against it such man is a liar.
For a wife must first honour the Lord,
Give first place alone to His Word,
And her man to the Lord, may be won,
By the deeds and the love she has shown.
And a man who is Godly and true,
Would surely win His wife to You,
As she saw, through his love, and his care,
Her Saviour, Christ Jesus, stand there.
But better when both love the Lord,
Whose marriage is ruled by His Word,
As both give the Father first place,
They will grow in His favour and grace.
Such a union is blessed from above,
For it’s filled with the Father’s pure love,
A love that flows out to the world,
Showing our God does honour His Word.
