I don’t want to grow up and be big, Lord;
I don’t want to grow up, and be strong,
I want to stay here, weak, and helpless,
Curled up on Your lap; I belong.
But babies must all grow, My darling,
And from ‘safety’ they venture away,
As you test your feet, and walk in My name,
You’ll find, close beside you, I’ll stay.
You hide from My Word, and My promise,
As if they were never for you,
Do you think that it’s only for others,
All the things that I’ve promised to do?
If you eat only what you are given,
Not try what else I’ve in store,
You limit the ways I can bless you,
My dear, I would bless you far more.
Don’t read with a sense of achievement,
That you must chase and complete,
Just read, and enjoy, ‘cos you love Me;
Then sit, and learn at My feet.
For others will read and hear nothing;
Many times as they read or they pray,
But simply because they adore Me,
They persistently read every day.
For I am the gentlest of Teachers,
And not every word is a test
Of the depths of your knowledge and learning,
But simply, an invite to rest.
I’ll show you the truth, as you’re ready,
When I decide it is right, I know when your heart can receive it,
When it’s able, with your mind to fight.
For your heart and your mind must battle,
If stronger for Me you would be,
And in finding that strength, little baby,
You’ll discover, My truth sets you free.
Free to grow and be all I have visioned,
To achieve the heights I have seen,
You are more than the fears you hold on to;
You are more than the places you’ve been.
Step out of the boat, though with trembling,
Away from the safety of pain,
Step out where the sea seems a-raging,
And trust in My love once again.
If you sink ‘neath the waves, I will lift you
My hand it will never be far,
If you stay in the boat, I’ll come to you,
But we’ll only stay, where you are.
Come out and come to Me, My brave one,
Come, let Me show you My way,
The race is no sprint, oh My precious,
But step after step, day by day.
I know there is pain in your growing,
But darling, there also is joy,
For where is the purpose in living,
If a man stays always a boy?
There are pleasures, unknown yet before you,
There are strengths, that you cannot see,
So place yourself, in My hands little one,
And just leave your growing – to Me.
