A thousand steps forward, a head held high; With a gaze fixed sure on the Lord, The devil comes in with a sneak and a sigh, And thinks his success is assured. He mutters, and murmurs, and gives us a prod, And reminds us of all we can’t do; But he reckons without our great loving God, Whose strength will carry us through. Though we may be human, and easily felled, And he thinks that he’s certain to win, We need to remind him, that once he beheld, God’s final answer to sin. God’s answer was final, ‘twas once and for all; For all time and all people that come; And though we may stumble, and though we may fall, We’ve a Saviour Who’ll carry us home. We need to believe, and we know that’s the key, In our Saviour Who died on the Cross. In a Saviour Who’s already gained victory, And Whose death He did not count as loss. When we’re weak, or we’re weary, or just cannot cope, When we feel like life’s burden’s too great; He turns us around and He offers us hope, With arms open wide He will wait. He waits for His children to open their eyes, To realise that they’re not alone; To know that His grace is our greatest prize, That He loves us and calls us, "His own". © 24/11/97
