What is more precious than silver or gold? A thousand things or so I’m told. But really there is only one Sought after ‘ere since time begun: A friend! Poor Adam in his paradise, Needed a friend to share his prize. He’d all the world to call his own, Yet it seemed worthless to him alone. The Lord above was quick to see, That one alone is misery, And gave him all that he could ask; A helpmate to complete his task. For David there was always John, Who stood by him when hope was gone. And for Naomi there was Ruth, Who showed she loved her in all truth. Although we often feel despair, We have a Friend, who’s always there, He’ll comfort, love and be our guide, If we will let Him live inside. A truer friend we could not find, He always knows our heart, our mind, But knowing them, He loves us yet, Though His commands we have not met. He also knows it matters much, To have a friend we see and touch, He urges us "love one another, Let Christians all, be sister, brother". If we will to His promptings heed, We each will find the friend we need, For in His great eternal plan, He has a friend for every man. Each needs a special friend to share, Our joy, our hope, our sorrow, care. Each needs a special friend to be, Think more of them and less of ‘me’. A special friend is God’s own gift Each can the other’s spirit lift; Together giving God the praises For special friendships that He raises. These friendships, plotted from above, Are watered well with His own love, And like His seeds, they best will grow, When outwardly His love we show. © Ailsa Yates 3-5/4/97
